5 Simple Things to Do Before You Get Out of Bed

How you begin your morning can influence how you feel for the rest of the day.

And your morning doesn’t have to begin the moment your feet hit the floor.

Before checking your phone, thinking about your to-do list, or rushing into the day, give yourself just a few quiet minutes in bed to intentionally wake up your body and mind.

This simple five-step morning practice can help you move from sleep into your day feeling more grounded, energized, and focused.

1. Gently Stretch Your Body

Before getting out of bed, take a moment to stretch.

Reach your arms above your head. Point and flex your toes. Gently move your shoulders or softly twist from side to side.

There is no need to force or strain. Simply notice how your body feels after a night of rest.

Think of this as saying, “Good morning” to your body.

Allow yourself to wake up slowly. There is no rush.

2. Tap to Wake Up Your Energy

Next, use your fingertips to gently tap along your arms, hands, thighs, and calves.

Imagine that you are waking up your energy and releasing anything that feels heavy or stagnant from the night.

Notice the light vibration and sensation created by the tapping.

You are waking yourself up from the inside out and welcoming fresh energy for the day ahead.

3. Take Three Conscious Breaths

Now bring your attention to your breath.

Take a slow, deep inhale through your nose.

Exhale gently through your mouth, releasing any tension you may be holding.

Repeat this two more times.

With each inhale, imagine yourself welcoming fresh energy.

With each exhale, release anything you do not need to carry into this new day.

Just three conscious breaths can create a beautiful pause between sleeping and doing.

4. Choose Your Word for the Day

Before your mind fills with schedules, responsibilities, and other people’s needs, decide how you want to show up today.

Choose one word to guide you.

Your word might be:

Peace. Love. Joy. Confidence. Abundance. Patience. Courage. Focus.

There is no right or wrong word. Choose the one that speaks to you.

Say it quietly to yourself and allow it to settle into your heart.

Then ask:

“What would it look like for me to live this word today?”

Your word becomes an anchor you can return to whenever the day becomes busy, stressful, or distracting.

5. Get Out of Bed Mindfully

Instead of jumping out of bed and immediately rushing into your day, make the transition slowly.

Roll onto your side and pause for a moment.

Gently sit up on the edge of your bed and take one final grounding breath.

Then place your feet on the floor and stand slowly.

As you stand, imagine your entire body waking up with energy and vitality.

You are ready to begin.

Your Morning Sets the Tone

This entire practice can take just a few minutes, but those few minutes belong completely to you.

You have stretched your body, awakened your energy, connected with your breath, chosen an intention, and entered your day mindfully instead of automatically.

Tomorrow morning, before reaching for your phone or your to-do list, try these five simple steps.

And remember your word throughout the day.

You don’t have to control everything that happens today. But you can choose the energy you bring to it.

Your morning is a new beginning.

Make it intentional.
